Urgent update on employment security in Health

Posted July 11, 2012 by Alex Scott

As we have advised members previously on Friday 29 June there were changes made to Directives by the Public Service Commission at the behest of government. The Directive relating to surplus employees has been repealed and replaced and the Directive relating to redundancies and retrenchments has been amended.

On 1 July 2012 the government quietly made further changes to the Public Service Regulation 2008 which made these new directives apply to employees of the Department of Health and to the new Hospital and Health Services.

These changes were made without any discussion or consultation whatsoever. Then they kept these changes to themselves.

These changes by government, made without any warning, threaten to return us to the bad old days of an understaffed and underresourced health system in Queensland. They are putting patient care at risk across the state and we must act now to prevent our Health system turning back towards the service delivery disasters of the past.

It is now even more important that Queensland Health members participate in the rallies to protest job losses and attacks on employment security.

Representatives from our union have been invited to a meeting with the Department regarding this change on Monday 16 July.  We will circulate a further update after this meeting. We have not had further advice about how this will work or that it would occur prior to the announcement in the media - as soon as we know more we will let you know.c
