Petition to change legislation regarding assault on Correctional Officers.

Posted on September 2, 2019

When a working Corrective Services Officer is a victim of serious assault in the course of duty the maximum penalty for the assailant is seven years imprisonment.

Currently, for other public service officers including police, paramedics and nurses suffering the same circumstance, the maximum penalty under the criminal code is fourteen years imprisonment.

Why are Together Corrections members and delegates only worth seven years and every other public service officer is worth fourteen? This needs to be made consistent.

We have petitioned Parliament to change the legislation regarding assaults on Correctional Officers to be consistent with all other public service officers.
