Our Wages Ask to Government

Posted on April 4, 2018

Today the Commonwealth Games kick off on the Gold Coast and so too does the next phase of our bargaining campaign for better wages and conditions.

Over the last two months thousands of Together members have had your say about whether or not the current government wages policy of 2.5% is enough.

Last week we asked you to vote in a poll about the recommendation made by your conference delegates.

Together members have overwhelmingly backed the decision delegates made and voted 98% in favour of asking the government for $50 per week or 3.5% (whichever is greater).

You can see what $50 per week or 3.5% (whichever is greater) looks like for your pay by checking out the table in this link.

Now the hard work begins!

There is no guarantee the government will sway from their 2.5% wages policy. It is up to Together members to campaign, recruit our colleagues and take action in our workplaces to win this claim.

The first step will be to sit down with government MPs and talk to them about the important work we do and why we deserve this increase in our wages.

Will you meet with your MP to lobby about wages? Contact us at core@together.org.au.

We also want to have a strong showing at Labour Day celebrations with a loud message saying "wages matter" to our political leaders. You can find out more about your local Labour Day celebrations here. Please plan to come along!

Remember - we win increases in our wages when we are strong in our workplace. If you have work mates who are thinking about joining the union - now is the time. Talk them about why you are a union member and why it’s important to build union strength right now.
