Offers of permanent employment for long term temp and casual members in DoE and schools.

Posted on May 24, 2021

Last week the Department confirmed that very long term temporary and casual staff with over four years of continuous service would be offered permanent employment.

Impacted employees received letters on Friday via email.

See HERE the letter from Deputy Director General Shannon Cook and HERE is the Frequently Asked Questions about this process from the Department.

It’s great to see improved job security in the Department of Education and also that the Department is facilitating this following your focus on these issues for many years.

Casual staff who may be captured may not have received a letter yet.

If you believe you are eligible and have not yet received a letter of offer submit your details here and we will raise this with the Department on your behalf. That is, if you have been in a temporary role for more than 4 years.

Being made permanent is such an important step for members – it gives you security that helps with so many things. It also helps us build a confident and secure group who can then fight for other important conditions to be improved. This is really important ahead of bargaining next year.

While this is great news for those members who have been offered permanency, we know that there remain many members in temporary, casual, higher duties positions or permanent for less than their regular hours.

It’s important that we keep seeking reviews of those arrangements and push for improved conversion rights for all staff. If you want to know more about your rights to seek permanent employment or you need advice get in touch with us on 1800 177 244 or at this email. Together we are securing our work and seeing more positive outcomes for members!
