LCCH: Your action has secured more funds from the government

Posted on October 27, 2015

Today the Minister for Health has formally announced an additional $70 million of funding for the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital as well confirming his faith and complete confidence in you as staff and the world-class treatment you provide and support. This is the outcome of a long period of engagement between the government and Children's Health Queensland, as a direct result of your action.

As Together members you have been raising these issues and fighting for more funding for the hospital for almost a full year and it is because of you and this consistent and prolonged pressure, that this outcome has been achieved.

You asked for a review into the hospital opening and provided detailed submissions including in relation to capacity, staffing and resourcing, and IT and other systems. You continued to place pressure on the hospital and the government to do more than just review the opening of the new facility but also to address ongoing issues of under-resourcing.

Last week I reiterated the need for more beds and more staff at the LCCH to alleviate capacity issues facing paediatric care state-wide.

You can see the long history of your activity on this issue here.

The announcement today is a direct result of your ongoing activism and engagement with the Minster and Children’s Health Queensland Board. These measures are a tangible step forward in addressing the issues you have raised, including:

  • $20 million in funding to deliver an extra 31 permanent, overnight beds at LCCH including in the paediatric intensive care unit.
  • Approximately 100 extra staff to effectively and safely operate these extra beds and deliver these extra services, as soon as possible; and
  • A $5.8 million funding boost for Information and Communications Technology systems including additional funding for integrated electronic patient record systems.
  • An extra $1.3 million a year in funding to medical retrieval services to ensure more sick children needing expert medical care can be retrieved from across the state.

I am proud of the work you and all of our members do in Children’s Health Queensland and of how you have stood up for patients and quality health care for children in Queensland.
