Seasons Greetings from Our Union Office

Posted December 21, 2011 by Alex Scott

Being in a union is about sticking together to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and with dignity and respect. This year every union member has been part of this story of solidarity and respect - thank you.

2011 has been an important year for us as Queenslanders to stick together in tough times like the floods and cyclones at the start of the year when thousands of union members went to the aid of your community and gave a helping hand when it was needed the most.

We have become stronger together this year and amalgamated two great unions into one of Queensland's now largest and strongest unions - Together! This was a great thing for all of us this year and will certainly provide us all with resources to stand up for members and work together and win in the future.

We have also seen the enormous efforts of members campaigning together in the Department of Transport and Main Roads, WorkCover, Queensland Health, Ergon, Energex, Blue Care and the Mater - ensuring that no cuts to conditions were brought in and that reasonable wages were awarded - congratulations to all those members! It's not over for some; the work continues.

It has also been a big year in airlines, with new EBs in QANTAS and Jestar and also in QANTAS the lock-out of some union workers showing the type of strategies many employers are now embracing. Union members sticking together in this sector and across the movement will ensure that workers will continue to win even in the face of these tactics.

Your work this year has meant that Queenslanders have better lives - better services, safer communities, a world-class health system, great education, better experiences in Queensland - and along with that you have stood together with your colleagues to work for a better life. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to building a better future together.

So as we head in to the festive season I, along with Vivienne our Union President, Kate and Julie and Kevin and all the staff in our union office wanted to wish you and your family a very happy and safe festive season.

I look forward to working with you in 2012
