Police staff job cuts - how low can they go?

No doubt you will have seen today's media coverage of the decision by the QPS to slash jobs in order to pay for the police officers' pay rise. Many of you will also have been informed at work today of the estimated 250 staff members' jobs that have to go.

We have had no communication with the Police Service in relation to these cuts prior to today and obviously the lack of consultation is gravely disappointing.

But more than that, the level of cuts proposed are simply appalling.

The $27 million in annual savings that the Government has ordered the Police Service to find equates to roughly 250 staff member jobs. These cuts will come from across the Service but will be most concentrated in corporate service areas.  In addition, 80 planned new positions will be withdrawn and all temporary positions will be put under the microscope.

There is no capacity for the Police Service to take this level of job cuts without dramatically impacting on policing services across Queensland and having serious workload impacts on staff members and police officers alike.

We've been told that there will be no forced redundancies, but that the job cuts will be achieved through an extension of the Voluntary Separation Program (more details available here http://www.psc.qld.gov.au/page/voluntary-separation/index.shtml). Any staff member interested in receiving a separation package will be able to submit an expression of interest.

This is a case of the Government trying to patch over its budget failings at the expense of key services that are already run on a shoestring.

Workers in Police deserve better treatment from their employer and Queenslanders deserve better treatment from their Government.
