Staying safe while it's hot outside!

Posted on January 13, 2017

Staying cool at work isn’t always easy – particularly when it’s so hot outside. If you are working outside this summer staying cool isn’t just for comfort, it’s about safety.

You have a right to a safe working environment and that extends to the impacts of heat stress.

The WorkSafe website has some important information about how to deal with heat stress here. WorkSafe suggests increased breaks, change in work procedures (e.g. doing outside work in the mornings and evenings when it is cooler) and providing water and protective equipment.

Like always sun safety is also critically important to stay safe at work. WorkSafe provides information on best practice for sun safety here.

Your local Workplace Health and Safety Officer can help with risk management during periods of increased warm weather especially if your work involves lengthy periods of time outside.

If you have any worries about your safety or need some support to talk to your manager about these issues give us a call at the union office on 1800 177 244.

Stay safe out there!
