Child Safety: What does yesterday’s announcement mean?

Posted on April 11, 2017

You would have seen the Premier and Minister's announcements yesterday regarding the Queensland Family and Child Commissioner's review of the department's actions in relation to the Mason Lee case.

The QFCC noted that there were some things that could be done better by the department and government. A number of announcements – including extra Child Safety positions – were made after Cabinet consideration of the review's findings.

While extra resources are always welcome in Child Safety, we know this won’t fix the systemic gap between the resources you need to work with families, and the resources you get.

These announcements also weren't subject to consultation with, and feedback from, workers like you who know best where the resources need to go.

Yesterday, the Premier also flagged that she is considering further funding allocations in the lead up to June’s state budget.

So - this is your moment.

We need to know if members feel strongly enough about ensuring there is real change in Child Safety. That’s why we're asking you to sign this petition if you haven’t already.

Some of you will have had conversations with organisers in your workplace, or over the phone, about the importance of having a strong union, and a strong voice, in Child Safety.

Can you speak to your co-workers about getting involved?

We'll be in touch again soon, but as always, if there is anything you'd like to discuss or if you have any questions, please contact me.
